Volunteer Positions

To further understand the potential opportunities for volunteering, volunteer roles have been identified.

Board of Directors: Elections are held each year at the Annual General Meeting, held in September. Prospective board members must be nominated by the membership. Board members are expected to attend monthly board meetings, and participate on committees as outlined in their job descriptions. Board members are expected to hold their position for a minimum of two years, but ideally longer so we can get some familiarity and comfort with functioning on the board, thereby making the board member a more valuable contributor.

Chaperon: Periodically, events come up requiring the presence of a chaperon. The chaperon is responsible for overseeing the conduct of the athletes in the housing facility, ensuring meals are available (sometimes involved in preparation depending upon the location), and assisting the coaches as needed with activities at the event. Chaperon needs may be required for the Christmas Camp, Alberta Winter Games, and Junior Nationals. Other chaperon needs may arise over time. Typically, a chaperon will participate in an event attended by their child. Volunteering as a potential chaperon does not commit you to any particular event, but indicates a willingness to consider this role if the need comes up.

Lodge Parent: Stay in the lodge with a radio each morning until 10am to help latecomers catch up with the groups. On Jumps and Bumps days, volunteers are required to fill shifts through the day to help with kids who return to the lodge, thereby freeing up the coaches to stay on the slopes with the rest of the group. Every Jumps and Bumps family is expected to fill a few shifts through the season.

Van Booking Coordinator: Southern has a team van that is used to transport our coaches to the hill on weekends. There is generally additional room for a limited number of athletes to ride in the team van. We require one volunteer who is willing to take track space availability and take reservations each week for these spaces.

Committee Member: a board member will chair all committees. Committee members will help take on specific tasks under the mandate of that committee. Participation on a committee does not require participation in all activities of that committee, just those that work out for the participant. The more committee members each committee has, the more the work can be divided up. Please see committee for a description of the functions of each committee.
